Q: I run PDF Reader on Windows 2000, and the software reports an error something like GDIPlus.dll is needed for Windows 2000.
A: So, good, that PDF Reader is able to run on Windows 2000, but you should definitely know about the need to first install "gdiplus.dll" and the instructions above, how to do so. You could download the following file,

WindowsXP-KB975337-x86-ENU.exe

from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18909

Although the file has "XP" on it's name, you are able to run it on Windows 2000, where this self-extracting archive produces a directory hierarchy on disk, but does not print out any further instructions. Then you just needed to locate "gdiplus.dll" in the newly created directory hierarchy, and copy "gdiplus.dll" to "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\". After that, you are able to successfully start PDF Reader.

There are good reasons why to keep running windows 2000 and not upgrade. In fact, if you do have another computer running Windows XP, but your laser printer will only work with Windows 2000, there does not exist working printer drivers for windows XP for that printer. So you wanted to install a PDF reading software on that windows 2000 PC to be able to print PDF files.
